Fantasy Book-Summer 2013

Welcome to our new fourth graders! This year for our summer reading, instead of doing a written report, you have the option of participating in a discussion online. I hope this will let us all see and respond to each other's thoughts about the book.

As a reminder, you need to begin each comment with the book you read, and should write your first name only under "Comment As." You should then write down the number of the questions you are answering, followed by your answer. Later on, you should check back and respond to another student's comment.

For your fantasy book, you need to answer two of the following questions:

1. Who is the main character and how would you describe them? Are they like you at all-why or why not?

2. What do you think are the three most important things that happen in this book? Why are these the most important?

3. What in this book happens that makes it a fantasy? List at least two things, and be specific.

4. Is the "world" that the author created one that you would like to live in? Why or why not?

  1. The book I read was The mouse and the Motorcycle.
    1. One thing that makes it a fantasy is that Ralph (that is the mouse) can talk.Another thing that makes the story a fantasy is that toy cars and motorcycles can't move on there own but in this story they do.
    2. The main character is Ralph. He is like me because he is adventurerous, helping, and caring.

1.The main character is Poppy. I'm like poppy because I help my dad too.
4.I would not like to be in this story because if I was a mouse I would not want to get eaten by Mr. Ocax.

  3. The book I read was Poppy.
    3. One thing that makes this book a fantasy is that there are talking animals. The main character is a mouse named Poppy that tries to help her family find a new home. Poppy fights off an owl that was trying to eat her by using a quill from a porcupine and stabbing him. Another example is that Poppy makes friends with a porcupine, and animals don't ask each other to help them out.
    4. The "world" that the author created is not a world I would like to live in because Mr. Ocax the owl said he was in charge and he lied to Poppy's family about protecting them. I would not like to live somewhere that someone was lying to me and scaring me.

  4. I am Samuel Aguirre and I read The "Not" so Jolly Roger by Jon Scieszka.

    1. The main characters are Fred, Sam and Blackbeard. Sam is like me because he has my name and wears glasses like me. Sam is into magic just like I am. I am not like the pirate because he is mean. I am not like Fred because he is a little rude and I am not.

    4. If I could change the book I would not use the word Jerk like the pirate did in the book because it is not a very nice word to call someone.
