Summer Reading 2014: Realistic Fiction

Welcome to our new fourth graders! This year for our summer reading, instead of doing a written report, you have the option of participating in a discussion online. I hope this will let us all see and respond to each other's thoughts about the book.

As a reminder, you need to begin each comment with the book you read, and should write your first name only under "Comment As." You should then write down the number of the questions you are answering, followed by your answer. Later on, you should check back and respond to another student's comment.

For your realistic fiction book by Beverly Cleary or Judy Blume, you need to answer two of the following questions:

1. Who is the main character and how would you describe them? Are they like you at all? Why or why not?

2. What do you think are the three most important things that happen in this book? Why are these the most important?

3. Do you think that this book could really happen in your school, family, or neighborhood? Why or why not?

4. If you could change something about the book, what would you change? (Do not write down "nothing" as your answer!)

  1. This is Giselle and I read The Mouse and the Motorcycle.2. The three most important things that happened are:When Ralph first tried to ride the motorcycle but found he could not ride it.When Keith [ The boy.] and Ralph [ The mouse] became best friends. Finally, when Keith had to leave and gave the motorcycle to Ralph to keep and keep safe.4.I would change that Keith did not have to leave and was just moving to another room. First of all Keith moved into room 215 in a hotel called Mountain View Inn. In room 215 that is where Ralph lived. That is how Keith [ the boy ] and Ralph [ the mouse ] met each other and made friends.

    1. This is Kelsey and I disagree. I would have let Kieth leave but have Ralph see him again in further years. That way Keith could have his motor cycle back and still in good shape.

    2. This is a great book, Giselle! It's not quite realistic fiction, though, because mice don't really ride motorcycles. Was there anything else in the book that couldn't happen in real life? Have you read any other Beverly Cleary books?

    3. This is Elias I agree with Kelsey, I think Keith would like his motorcycle in good shape. And I think Ralph will eventually learn how to ride the motorcycle. Keith should be there to help Ralph learn how to ride it.

  2. This Kelsey and I read Ramona Quimby age 8. 1. Ramona is the main character. She is noisy and is very creative. Also, she loves D.E.A.R. a.k.a Sustained Silent Reading. She is like me because I love to read and is sometimes creative.4. The thing i would change is the stranger who pays for tere food at Whooper Burger. I would have Ramona have met this guy and know a lot about, him so it could be like a puzzle.

    1. That would probably change a lot in the book if it included a mystery, too! Have you read any mystery books before? What did you think of them?

    2. Hi Kelsey, this is Jolie and I am new to St.Sylvester. I have not read this book but I read Ramona the Brave. I am like you and Ramona because I like to read too and I have a big imagination like Ramona in Ramona the Brave.

  4. This is Elias and I read Double Fudge by Judy Blume. The questions that I will answer are number one and number three.

    1. The main characters in the book are Fudge and Pete Hatcher. Fudge is very funny and creative about ways to make money. Pete is Fudge's big brother, and is very smart. Pete also likes going to the museum. Fudge is like me because he finds different ways to get money. Pete is not like me because I do not like going to the museum and I do not have a little brother.

    3. Yes this can really happen because kids try to figure out different ways to get money.

    1. Elias, I agree with you I do not like going to the museum myself and I do not have a little brother as well.... I like that fudge came up with ways to earn money to try to buy the world and made his own money. I like that kids come up with ways too make money like having a lemonade stand or cookie sales. so kids are very smart when it come to ways of making money.

    2. This is Christian, and I agree with Elias. I like to find ways to make money too. My grandma pays me $5 to help clean the backyard and I like it because I earn my own money and can buy what I want.

  5. This is Aaliyah and I read Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary.
    1. The main character is Leigh Botts. He is a boy that is lonely, sad, and angry. He is lonely and sad because his father does not live with him anymore. He is also sad because his mom and him moved and he is the new kid in school. He is angry because someone keeps stealing his lunch and he does not know who it is. He likes to write because he has been writing to his favorite author since he was in second grade and now is in sixth grade. Leigh is like me in the way that we both like to write. We are different because he is lonely, sad, and angry an I am happy ,and I have a lot of family around me that loves me.
    3. I think this could really happen because some people could have their parents divorced .The kids could live with either their dad or mom. Some people could move away and go to a new school. Some kids can get picked at in another way or could be picked at in the same way just like Leigh having his lunch stolen.

    1. This is Giselle, I agree with you on number 3. Yes, parents get divorced and children get picked on too. There are bullies everywhere. I also liked how you wrote this paragraph. It is nice and neat. There is so much to read. You might be a writer or a teacher one day if you want to.

    2. It sounds like Leigh has a really rough life right now! Does he change in the book and become happier?

      Delete
    3. Hello this is Sydney and I agree with you that some people get divorced and do not come back together, but that is just life.

      Delete
    4. Leigh becomes happier because he makes friends and his dad finds his dog that had gone missing. He never found out who stole his lunch because they stopped stealing his lunch after he put a burglar alarm on his lunch box.

  6. Hi, this is Christian, and I just read 'Then Again, Maybe I won't' by Judy Blume. I want to answer questions number 1 and number 3.

    1. The main characters of the story are Tony and Joel. Tony is a sensitive teenager, who is athletic, he is a dreamer, is honest and fell in love with Joel's sister. He loves his family and is very close to his mom, dad and grandma. Joel is a rich boy who steals and always wants to play chess. I am more like Tony, because I love my family, I love baseball and like to dream. Tony liked basketball more but he wanted to buy a baseball mitt. The only thing that I didn't like about Tony is that he tried to drink alcohol.

    3. Yes, this can happen in my neighborhood and school. It can happen because you can meet a new rich kid that may live next to you and become your friend. Tony and Joel hung around a lot and had a fun summer together until Joel was caught stealing at a store and his parents decided to send him to military school. This was a long but interesting book.

But mom didn't like the book too much because she said some chapters were not good for me to read but I think it was a cool book.

  7. This is Jonathan and I just read Beezus and Ramona. I want to answer questions 3 and 4.

    3. Yes, I think that this book could really happen because, little kids can take other kids stuff. Like when Ramona took Wayne's sucker or when she tried to get the other kids to eat the fig newtons.

    4. Some of the things I would change in the book would make it so that Ramona wouldn't of had so many problems. Like when she took one bite out of a bunch of apples then threw them away and the part where kids thought she gave away food that had worms in it. Life should be happier for everyone.

    1. I like your last sentence, Jonathan, about how life should be happier for everyone. Do you think Ramona caused some of her own problems, though?

    2. Hi Mrs. Lindo, yes but maybe Ramona is a small person like me. I need lots of help so I can stay away from problems. Maybe Ramona didn't get enough help.

  8. Hi my name is Jolie and I am new to the school. I read Ramona the Brave by Beverly Cleary. I picked questions 1 and 3.

    1. Who is the main character and how would you describe them? Are they like you at all? Why or why not?
Ramona is the main character. She has a big imagination and is in first grade. She likes to color with her dad and play brick factory. She always makes messes and some people think she is a pest, like her big sister Beezus. I think Ramona is like me in some ways. I have a big imagination too and love to color with my dad. I also have a big sister who thinks I am a pest.

    3. Do you think that this book could really happen in your school, family, or neighborhood? Why or why not?
Yes, I think this book could really happen because it is about a little girl just like me with an imagination and a big sister. It is just an ordinary family living their life just like us.

    1. Hi Jolie,I agree with you I have a sister to and she is mean like Beezus.Romona and Beezus are the main character in the story. Why does your sister think your a pest

    2. I'm excited to meet you, Jolie! I'm glad you're imaginative, it's such a fun trait to have. Do you think Ramona really acts like a pest sometimes, or does her older sister just not understand her?

      Delete
    3. Hi Jolie. I also think I am like Ramona. I like to do things with my dad like color, cut the grass, and ride our bike together.

      Delete
    4. Hi Diana, my sister is a teenager so she thinks I am a pest because I'm younger.

      Thanks Anabel.

      Delete
  9. Hi my name is Anabel and I read Ramona the Pest. I would describe Ramona as curious because she pulls Susan's hair to see it boing. She is also daring because she kisses Davy. Davy is a boy she likes in school. I think we are not the same because she does not think about what she does like pulling someone's hair. She does not see that what she does is wrong.

  10. Rosy here I read Beezus and Ramona

3.I think this could happen in my school, family, or neighborhood because my sister or brother could be like Ramona I mean I could even be like Ramona. That could happen to anyone I know. Or anyone in the world

    4. What I would change about this book is instead of Ramona being the bad one Beezus should be the bad one. Also maybe their dad should get a new job and so they have to make new friends in New York City

    1. Hi Rose, This is Jonathan, how was your summer? I was just wondering what part of Beezus and Ramona did you think could happen? I read the book also and I do agree with you. See you soon.

  11. Hi , this is Diana I read Fudge a mania by Judy Blume, the main character is Fudge he is mean, doesn't pay attention,is dirty, and is bad sometimes. The important part is when Fudge and his mom said that they were going to Maine with Shelia's parents,Pete and Shelia don't like each other. The baseball game is important because Pete wants to prove to Big Afel a baseball player that he can play baseball good.Big afel said to work on concentration. The wedding is important because Sheila and Pete started getting along together as friends.

  12. Hello this is Sydney and I read the book Ramona's World.1.The main character is Ramona. I am not like Ramona because she to go to the park everyday, and do the monkey bars. i like to draw and play with my friends. So i am not like Ramona. 3. Yes, I do think this could happen in school because Ramona likes to go to her best friend's house Daisy, and a lot of people are friends at school and go to each other's house's.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hi Jolie! This is Kelsey and I agree with you about Romana just being a ordinary girl like us. I really do like your writing! :) I know how Romano feels about a older sister because I have one too. (older by 2 minutes!) We are all just like Romona and her family!

  14. This is Eric H. I read the book double fudge by Judy Blume.
Fudge and Pete are the main character in double fudge. Pete is Fudges big brother. Pete is helping Fudge understand about money and Fudge is always looking for ways to get money.
Fudge is like me, I am always trying to buy games and toys. Isaac my big brother is helping me understand about money.
I think some of the most important things are, Fudge is obsessed with money and creates fudge bucks. Peter and his parents try and teach fudge where money comes from. Fudge wants to buy the whole world.

I think things like what fudge does happen every day in real life. People work for money to buy things that they need and want or like.
I would change that fudge wants money to help his parents not buy the world.

  16. Hi this is Gianna and I read Ramona Quimby age 8 by Beverly Cleary.
    1. Ramona is the main character of the story. She is an 8 year old girl who is going into third grade and is funny and has wild imagination. She is like me because we both like to make people laugh and i get stuck playing with my little brother and sister just like she gets stuck playing with Willa Jean. we both also like hanging out with our dads.
3.I think this could happen in my school because Ramona is a normal kid that gets in trouble just like everyone else.

    1. Hi Gianna this is Mckayla and I agree with you on number 1 and 3. Ramona is like one of us. She is very funny, has a very wild imagination and she gets in trouble like any kid would .

  17. Hi this is McKayla and I read Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great by Judy Blume. I picked number 1. and number 3.
1.Sheila is the main character. Sheila is scared of many things. Sheila is scared of water, dogs and the dark. She is not like me because she is afraid of the dark and I'm not afraid of the dark because I watch scary movies in the dark. She is afraid of water and I'm not because I go to swimming class. She is also afraid of dogs and I'm not because I would like one as a pet.
3.Yes. I think this book could happen in a school, family or neighborhood because a family could go out of town for the summer. Like I did with my family this summer.

  18. Hello this is Priya and I read Here's to you Rachel Robinson.
3.Writing a biography can happen in school for an " All About Me " project,
for homework, or just for fun at recess!!
4.If I can change something about the story it would be that Rachel would of
been born first, it would be a 20 page biography, and that she would of had more friends.

  19. Hi this is Julian, I read Romona and her father over the summer by Beverly Cleary 1. Romona is the main character she does not even look like me because she is a girl and I'm a boy her father lost is job and my father has his job still (thank goodness) 3. I think it could happen because they might want a summer vacation to Chicago.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I like your post because I thought it was funny when you talked about how your dad still had his job. Why do you think they want to go to Chicago?

    1. In Freckle Juice, the main character is Andrew is not like me because he wanted to have freckles and tried to make them appear, and I don't try do that and I try to stay healthy.
    3. I think Freckle Juice could really happen because they're using real ingredients like onions, pickle juice, and grade juice.
