Realistic Fiction Summer Reading

Welcome to our new fourth graders! This year for our summer reading, instead of doing a written report, you have the option of participating in a discussion online. I hope this will let us all see and respond to each other's thoughts about the book.

As a reminder, you need to begin each comment with the book you read, and should write your first name only under "Comment As." You should then write down the number of the questions you are answering, followed by your answer. Later on, you should check back and respond to another student's comment.

For your realistic fiction book by Beverly Cleary or Judy Blume, you need to answer two of the following questions:

1. Who is the main character and how would you describe them? Are they like you at all-why or why not?

2. What do you think are the three most important things that happen in this book? Why are these the most important?

3. Do you think that this book could really happen in your school, family, or neighborhood? Why or why not?

4. If you could change something about the book, what would you change? (Do not write down "nothing" as your answer!)

6 comments:

  1. This is the current third grade and we read Because of Winn Dixie.

    3. I think this book could really happen because Daniel knows a dog that ran away just like Winn Dixie did. Mariah saw a dog that broke into a store and the manager chased it, just like the manager and the employees were chasing Winn Dixie. Chloe has seen people look for their dogs. Mimi knows people who haven't had a lot of friends. Julean's dog made a mess in the house, and Winn Dixie ripped the couches and made vases fall.

    4. We would change Winn Dixie being scared of lightening because he ran around the house and created a mess. We would also change Dunlap and Stevie teasing Opal because she was sad and felt bad about it.

Kristina agrees that Dunlap and Stevie should have been nice because Opal just moved to Naomi, Florida. Winn Dixie is important, though, because without him Opal never would have made new friends.

  2. 2.The main character in my realistic book is Henry Huggins.I would describe Henry as a person that delivers stuff like a mail man.(4. I would change the part when Henry is stuck in the clubhouse when he keeps on saying(help! help!) I would put that his mom came home from downtown and she saw him and she found the key and let him free.

    1. It's been a while since I read this book. How does Henry get out of the clubhouse?

    I read Because of Winn-Dixie.
    2. Opal meeting Winn-Dixie is important because Opal didn't have any friends. Another important thing is when you find out Winn-Dixie is afraid of thunder because the family didn't understand Winn-Dixie's behavior. Winn Dixie can carry animals in her moouth without killing them, and this is important because it shows Winn Dixie is polite.
    4. I would change the ending by not having Winn-Dixie be lost and making the wait and see tree grow.

    1. I disagree with #4 because I think the ending should be when Opal finds out more about her mother.
